Twisters-Dukes postponed
due to rain; fireworks show tomorrow night
Michael Radomski
(PITTSFIELD, Mass.)- The
Torrington Twisters and the Pittsfield Dukes were rained out tonight
at Wahconah Park.
The two teams started the scheduled doubleheader at six o’clock as
the Torrington Twisters got off to an early 1-0 lead against Dukes
starter Alex MacKenzie (Canisius). Corey Shimada (Utah) led off the
game with an infield single, and stole second for his 12th stolen
base of the season. Joe Di Pinto (USC) followed with an RBI single
as Shimada scored the first run of the game.
In the bottom of the first inning, Torrington starter Andrew Triggs
(USC) retired Craig Hertler (San Jose State) on a groundout, and was
ahead 1-2 on Jason Martin (San Jose State) when the skies opened up.
The storm sent fans running for cover as the rain was falling
sideways with gusts of winds up to forty miles per hour. The
Pittsfield Dukes players then put the tarp on the field at Wahconah
Park and the game was suspended about two hours later.
The storm only lasted a few minutes but the impact was felt across
the field as many puddles collected on the infield and outfield
grass.
No makeup date has been announced but fans can use those tickets for
any of the remaining Dukes’ home games. Pittsfield has three
remaining home games against Southern League rivals and two more
against the Northern Division.
Because of the rainout tonight, the fireworks extravaganza will take
place tomorrow night, July 19th. WBRK 1340 AM and STAR 101.7 FM will
sponsor the fireworks show approximately twenty minutes after the
conclusion of the Newport Gulls and Pittsfield Dukes game. First
pitch is scheduled for seven o’clock at Wahconah Park.
