Four run first inning,
Vazquez take down Twisters
By: Michael Radomski
(TORRINGTON, CT) – The
Pittsfield Dukes defeated the Torrington Twisters last night 8-2 at
Fuessenich Park.
Pittsfield got off to the early lead by scoring four runs in the
first off of Twisters starter Andrew Triggs (USC). Chris Edmondson
(Le Moyne) gave the Dukes the 1-0 lead with an RBI triple to center
field. Matt Adams (Slippery Rock) would add an RBI single two
batters later, and Kevin Clements would deliver with a 2 run double
to put Pittsfield ahead 4-0.
The lead was more than enough for Dukes starter Kyle Vazquez
(Franklin Pierce). Vazquez would pitch seven innings allowing two
runs (1 earned) and striking out five. The Twisters would score a
run in the bottom of the third off Vazquez, but Pittsfield bounced
back for two more runs in the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Torrington trailed 6 to 2 and
had two runners on with one out. Vazquez buckled down retiring Chase
Austin (Elon) on a groundout and striking out Jaren Matthews
(Rutgers) to end the inning.
Pittsfield would score two more runs in the ninth inning as both
Jake Rosenbeck (Buffalo) and Craig Hertler produced RBI singles
against Craig Schneider (Alderson Bradley College) who pitched the
final three innings for Torrington. Hertler finished 4 for 6 in the
game with a run scored.
With the Pittsfield win, and the Newport loss, the Dukes improve to
13-11 on the season, and sit a half game back behind the Gulls. The
Dukes return home tonight and will host the Danbury Westerners in a
seven o’clock game at Wahconah Park. It’s Dalton night at the park
and Alex MacKenzie (Canisius) is the probable starter.
The Dukes will also host the Torrington Twisters next week for a
doubleheader on July 18th beginning at six o'clock. The Twisters and
Dukes will play two games, each scheduled for seven innings, and
then STAR 101.7 FM and WBRK AM 1340 will sponsor the fireworks show
after the second game.
