Oskandy's gem gives
Danbury back-to-back wins
By: Michael Radomski
(PITTSFIELD, Mass.)- The
Westerners used a solid pitching performance from Michael Oskandy
(Quinnipiac University) and a four run third inning to win their 2nd
straight game, 6-0 at Pittsfield.
The Westerner starter tossed seven shutout innings of two hit ball
keeping the NECBL batting average leaders off of the scoreboard.
Dukes starter Louie Bernardini (Wheaton College) pitched two hitless
innings to start, only yielding one hit, but the third inning would
be troublesome.
The Westerners batters would bat around in the third inning, scoring
four runs in the frame, and knocking Bernardini out of the game.
Melvin Castillo (Eastern CT State) would lead off with a single, and
following a fielder's choice, Bernardini would start to struggle.
The Wheaton student athlete would then hit Vinny Dammann (Pace
University), and walk Zach Babbitt (San Diego State) to load up the
bases. A wild pitch would score Dammann on the play and give Danbury
the 1-0 lead. Bernardini would then walk Shane Kingsley (Marist
College) ,one of three for him on the day, and the Dukes would turn
the ball to reliever Mike Woytek (Wright State).
With the bases loaded and one out, Woytek struck out Michael Olt (UCONN)
for the second out, but T.J Thomas (San Diego State) would hit a two
run double to build the lead to three. Kyle Mahoney then added an
RBI single to give Oskandy a 4-0 lead to pitch with.
The Westerner starter continued to be effective as he retired 18 of
the last 19 batters he faced, leaving after the seventh inning.
Brian Craig (Dominican College) would pitch the final two innings to
complete the 6-0 shutout victory for Danbury.
With the win, the Westerners improve to 4-12 on the season and will
have Monday off. With the loss, the Dukes record drops to 8-9 on the
season. Pittsfield will travel to Newport, Rhode Island on Monday
night and play the Gulls in a 6:30 contest.
